Not a World Apart, A look into Autism

I have decided to focus on a photo essay dedicated to Autism called "Not a World Apart".

This will be one of the hardest photo essays for me to embark on, not do to the subject matter but whether I can show a world of understanding, kindness and education through my photographs.
Many of the photographs will be private for the families or for the use for educational institutions to further understand this developmental disability.

Autism is a complex developmental disability. Experts believe that Autism exhibitis itself during the first three years of a person's life. The condition is the result of a neurological disorder that has an effect on normal brain function, affecting the development of the person's communication and social interaction skills.

The earlier a child is diagnosed with autism, the better their chances of overcoming the difficulties that come with the disorder.
"It's not a cure, but it changes the trajectory," says Dr. Gary Goldstein, president and CEO of the Kennedy Krieger Institute and professor of neurology at Johns Hopkins University.

"We need to continue our efforts to educate the health care community and general public to recognize the developmental problems associated with ASD and other developmental disorders at earliest age possible, Dr. Max Wiznitzer, a pediatric neurologist at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland

Autism is the fastest growing disability in the US with an economic impact of more than $90 billion. The CDC now reports that one in 68 children are being classified with autism spectrum disorders, compared to 1 in 10,000 in the 1970’s.

Achieving progress in understanding the cause, nature, and treatment of autism requires broad concepts and approaches, in early education  It is likely that the discovery of autism will depend on the development of dimensional measures of broader autism traits.

Through this photo essay I hope to uncover the world of Autism and overcome the stereo types so often accompany it by society.
